Drunken Avengers: Intro Skit That Never Was

This is the intro skit was originally supposed to be at the top of The Avengers episode of IntoxiNarration!

So as you may knew, the Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl Episode of IntoxiNarration had an intro skit at the beginning of the episode.  It was also the most viewed vid on the channel so far.

So the reason it didn't make the cut was that the green screen effects just didn't work, which I explain in the video.  I decided to edit it together since everyone put so much work into it.  We will not be doing gteen screen effects until we get a real green screen and a lighting kit.  We may be moving in the next couple of months, so that's when we'll kick this shit into high gear.  Hopefully.

Share and like the videos and subscribe to Buck Ass Nerd's videos on YouTube and help make this into a full on website.  Thanks for the support so far.

I'll see you fuckin' nerds later.

IntoxiNarration: The Avengers - All New No DVD needed format... less than 30 minutes long!

YES! The third episode of IntoxiNarration is up.  The format is different, but you no longer need a dvd or booze, but you can get drizzy none the less if you want.  This included the funniest and best parts of our movie commentary with the movie included.  It's less than half a hour long, so it's a lot more accessible.  Hope you enjoy seeing us get annihilated while watching one of my favorite movies.

These is a skit being edited that was supposed to go at the beginning, but due to technical problems, it's taking longer than I thought.  I'll upload it separately and post it here when it's done.

Thanks for everything.  This blog hit 10,000 views this week!  Much more to come and I'll see you fuckin' nerds later!

Grab that beer!

Video Review: Daredevil Season One

This is my first video review of a television season... ever!  No better way to start this bitch than with an awesome show such as this.  Enjoy and thanks for watching.

Written Review: Daredevil Season 1

Yeah, it's pretty fucking awesome

Daredevil is a Netflix exclusive series based on the Marvel Comics character.  The show is gritty and violent, but still has a lot of heart.  The characters are well developed.  Even the side characters and villains have back stories and interesting motivations.  This is the interpretation of the character that fans wanted, but instead got the goofier 2004 movie.  This series blows the movie out of the water.

Though the movie starring Ben Affleck had some of the moments from the comics, it also had a fight on a seesaw.  The movie wasn't really that dark, but had some fun moments.

This new series is a fresh start for one of Marvel's lesser known heroes.  Daredevil may be known as 'the poor man's Spider-Man or Batman', but the character has a rich history and a dedicated fan base.  I personally saw DD for the first time in the animated Spider-Man series from the 1990's.  I had no clue who the character was, but over time he popped up in more and more media.

90's style, bitch!

Netflix's original series takes place in the shared Cinematic Universe, same as The Avengers and Agents of Shield, but in a much darker and violent corner.  A corner known as Hell's Kitchen.  Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is a lawyer starting a small practice with his friend Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson).  Matt was exposed to a batch of chemicals as a child that took his sight, but gave his other senses a massive boost.  He can't see, but he can hear, taste, smell and feel at hyper human levels.

As The Man in the Black Mask and later the hero, Daredevil. This version of Daredevil starts with a Trial of the Incredible Hulk outfit, much in the 'learning curve' vein of many super hero origins as of late.  Matt is figuring out what kind of hero he wants to be, or if he is a hero at all.  He is much more serious than his movie counterpart.

Matt fights against crime in his home turf, which eventually leads him into battle with his greatest rival, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka The Kingpin (though he isn't called The Kingpin, yet).  Fisk is secretive at first, but is always unpredictable.  He is calculating, but emotional.  He is a puppet master, but also will get his hands dirty building his criminal empire.  And his hand get really, really dirty... er... bloody.  I can't help but see a little Frank Underwood in this version of the Kingpin.

Other characters like the ever resourceful reporter Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall) and secretary Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) are well acted and have pretty tragic character arcs.  Rosario Dawson plays the nurse Claire Temple, who finds Matt in a dumpster after taking a beastly beating.  Stick (Scott Glenn), who was absent from the Affleck movie, even makes an appearance as a 'take no shit' teacher and all around bad ass.

For 13 episodes you're going to enthralled, on the edge of your seat or shocked at not only some of the more violent moments, but how the story develops.  Sometimes in pretty unexpected ways, which is a trick for a character that's been around for decades.

Netflix's Daredevil is great.  From the fight scenes to the drama, the show has something for everyone.  This is, without question, the best television series Marvel has developed, period.  You are missing out on a lot if you skip this one... so don't.

Rating: Fucking Awesome

Drunken Credits: The Avengers

We filmed most of The Avengers episode of IntoxiNarration.  Drunken Credits is done and ready for your viewing.  The audio quality is a LOT better than the Pirates episode.  A little mic placement fix and we rocked that shit.  We are really drunk after the episode, so forgive the slurring speech, but the episode is pretty entertaining.  Every Friday I'm putting something IntoxiNarration oriented up, but keep checking out the blog.

I'll be posting a Xenoblade Chronicles review up this weekend in written form.  I may have a video review as well.  I'll be posting Mortal Kombat gameplay videos here and there in the lead up to the release of Mortal Kombat X.

I'll see you fuckin' nerds later!

Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain American Reviews

Iron Man 2 (2010)

Iron Man 2’s story in a nutshell is Tony Stark outs himself as Iron Man.  Justin Hammer, a rival in the weapons industry, continually tries to out do him while, Ivan Vanko, the son of  a scientist that worked with Tony’s father, seeks revenge for his perceived theft of his father’s work.  Whew.  Don Cheadle replaces Terrance Howard as Rhodey and dawns his war machine armor towards the end of the movie.

Ivan Vanko is The Crimson Dynamo in the comics, but he seems to be a combination of that character and Whiplash/Backlash from the comics.  Mickey Rourke does a great job as this evil, but sympathy inducing character.

I’ll keep this short since I’m doing three smaller reviews today.  The graphics are as good or better than the first movie.  The comedic aspects of the first are in full tilt here without going to far.  The action is top notch.  The characterization of the turmoil inside of Stark in this case is rather than changing as a person due to his near death experience in the first movie, has to deal with the reality that he is going to die from his power core poisoning him.  Captain America’s shield (or a prototype?) makes as appearance and a television shows that the events of The Incredible Hulk are going on at the same time.  Also the after credits sequence alludes to the next movie in the series.

Iron Man 2 is decent, but the weakest entry in the trilogy.

Thor (2011)

Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Anthony Hopkins is Odin, Natalie Portman is Jan Foster, Tom Hidleson is Loki.  With that out of the way, I didn’t know what to expect from this movie.  I liked the Ultimate version of Thor, who isn’t anything like this Thor, personality wise (originally… Jeph Loeb screwed that up).  Thor was missing during the time I was reading New Avengers, so I wasn’t as familiar with the character as I had been other comic characters.

The story, though complicated with all of its mythology, is boiled down pretty simply in the introduction (with a lot of awesome action).  Thor due to brash actions that start a war is stripped of his power and sent to Earth by his father, Odin.  There’s some trickery by his brother Loki and Asgard is put into danger as well as Earth (or Midgard to the Asgardians).

I found it odd that they never straight up called the Asgardians ‘gods’, but were referenced as being worshipped as gods.  The word god for current society is so convoluted or vague that calling a physical being with super powers a god could be confusing… I guess.  If they are aliens, that’s weird at best, but I’m pretty sure everyone will call Thor a god outside of the movies.

The graphics are good.  The characterizations are entertaining and fun, but serious when they need to be.  That seems to be a pattern with the MCU.  Comedic aspects mixed eloquently with serious aspects.  This is a bit more serious than Iron Man 1 & 2, but not as much as Captain America.  This is a good movie as well.  It may be the most important movie in the series to watch before The Avengers due to Loki being the main villain in both.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

This movie is more of a set up for The Avengers if anything.  It is still a really good movie.  I frankly like having bigger universes link up to each other to create a wider continuity.  A lot of reviewers complained about the ending just being a set up for The Avengers and didn’t pull of a good ending in it’s own right.  I really disagree.  But first… synopsis time.

Chris Evans is Steve Rogers who is a scrawny and can’t get into the military to fight during WWII (this is a period piece in case you were wondering).  He is accepted into a super soldier program due to his heart and his understanding that power shouldn’t be abused.  Hayley Atwell is Peggy Cater, who is a British intelligence officer and Steve’s love interest.  Hugo Weaving is the Red Skull.

The Red Skull obtains an object (that is Asgardian in origin) called the cosmic cube, which seems to be an infinite power source.  Hydra (a Nazi scientific offshoot, that becomes independent during the movie) creates weapons the will dominate the allies and allow The Red Skull to take out the Nazis and the Allies.

Steve Rogers becomes the first super soldier, but the man who created the serum is killed and no one else can get the solution to work (remember this isn’t the digital age).  Steve becomes a USO/Bond selling entertainer, which is hilarious by the way and really reflects the time period.  When his childhood friend is captured in Europe, Captain America disobeys orders and proves himself as a soldier (before this even his fellow soldiers taunted him).

I’m not going to spoil any more, because I actually know people who haven’t seen this yet, so I’ll stop there.  The Red Skull is awesome.  He’s evil and deceptive and feels like an equal to Cap in almost every way.  Chris Evans and his skinnying had people nervous about his portrayal, but he does a fantastic job and I even forget that he played The Human Torch from time to time.  This movie could have been really bad, but it was done really well. Joe Johnston more or less makes up for JP3 with this movie.  Sorry had to do it.  Side Note -  JP3 is okay on occasion, it just isn’t anywhere near the first two movies.

The ending is really sad and I think sets up the man out of time aspect to Steve Rogers that wasn’t touched upon in this movie, but I’m sure will be explored in The Avengers or Cap 2.

This leads directly into The Avengers and should be watched before this beast comes out Friday.  I’m seeing the marathon which is all five of these movie followed by a midnight showing of Marvel’s The Avengers.  I’ll have a full on review for that up as soon as I get home on Friday.

Iron Man (2008) Review

Iron Man was the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it exists now.  Not all Marvel based movies at the moment fit into this universe, due to ownership agreements.  Eventually all of them will be rolled into Marvel Studios, but that’s another issue all together.  Since the Avengers comes out next week and I haven’t been doing any reviews lately, I thought I’d use this event to give me a new start.  I’ll review all five movies up to this point as well as The Avengers as soon as I get home after the midnight showing.

Iron Man stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man.  Downey Jr. was pretty much made for this role, and even though he was pretty famous before, I think this movie launched him to new heights.  He’s sarcastic, greedy and uncaring in the beginning and makes a believable transition to generous, caring, and still sarcastic, but in  a more charming way.

Gwyneth Paltrow is great a Pepper Potts.  This was a character I wasn’t really familiar with when the movie came out.  I mostly read books from the Ultimate Universe, which at the time, she hasn’t showed up in very much.  I had read Civil War at this point, but she wasn’t in that either, so seeing a character that I cared about, but didn’t know much about was more pleasing than I expected.  She cares about Tony no matter what he does, but when she believes in what he’s doing, then you see that in her portrayal of the character.

Terrance Howard is James ‘Rhodey’ Roads.  He does a pretty good job, but he doesn’t become War Machine until the next movie (spoiler alert), but I think he plays the character less serious than Don Cheadle does (spoiler alert again… he’s not in Iron Man 2), but I enjoy Tony and Rhodey’s comical back and forths more than their really serious banter in the second movie.

Jeff Bridges is Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger (though he’s never called that, which seems to be a pattern in a lot of modern super hero movies, not to name the villian… Iron Man 2 does the same thing).  When he’s pretending to be Tony’s friend you believe it, but when he shows his true colors, he’s a person you love to hate.

Tony Stark is a rich industialist that almost dies and realizes making weapons for the government is wrong.  He sees a friend he made during his capture in the middle east die to save him which causes a drastic personality change.  He wants to change his company, but to make change happen in the world he creates a suit of armor (that he pioneered during his life and death situation) to take on the evils of the world (but first the evils his company allowed to take place).  A business partner gets ahold of his tech and a battle insues, etc.

The story compared to the original comic story has a lot of modern updates throughout.  They’re in the middle east, not Vietnam.  The tech takes a lot from currently computer displays.  The 3D interface in the movie may not be that far off in all honestly, but it’s really cool none the less.  The process of him creating the armor is detailed pretty thouroghly, but remains interesting the entire time.

The special effects are top notch.  I know a lot of people, especially nerds like me, love to gripe about CGI.  This movie is not one to look at and say, “Hey, look at that not real looking computer puppet.  This should be stop motion,” or whatever the current trend of retro effects is.  The suit CG mixes well with Tony Stark, when you can see part of him, and only part of the suit is CG.  They used a partial suit when filming, but that just adds to realism.  There are a couple instances where you get drawn out of the film by the CG looking a little off (Iron Monger’s suit retracting is a good example), but nothing horrible.

This movie may be as important as The Dark Knight as far as comic book movies go.  It took a different route mixing comedic and serious aspects of the script and melded them perfectly.  The characters are believable and you want to know what happens to them after the movie.  Which you get to in Iron Man 2 (more on that later).

In the end I give Iron Man a 9.5 out of 10 (yes I’m using a 0 to 10 scale now) AI Jarvises… or Jarvis’… whatever Jarvis isn’t a person in the movie, he’s an AI voice. And there’s 9.5 of them.
