I didn’t see Surrogates in theatres. I wanted to, but I never got around to it. One of my friends wanted to see something else at the time (can’t remember what it was), so I skipped out on Bruce Willis’ newest sci fi outing. Should it be Sy Fy now, you know like the channel… bah.
Well I checked it out on Netflix this weekend and holy crap. It was way better than I thought it would be. I don’t know why I had low expectations, but for some reason I did.
The basic premise of the movie (which is all laid out in the introductory sequence, then on further detail in tidbits throughout the movie) is that people in the future sit in hibernation beds with a brain interface that controls robots. People live life through these robots, due to not being happy with who they are or what they look like, or as you see throughout the movie, due to social pressures and prejudice of what the general populace calls ‘Meatbags’.
Bruce Willis is de-aged Professor X style and seems to be like everyone else with a Surrogate or Surri. There is a weapon that is killing the users through the robots, and Bruce Willis has to solve the mystery. James Cromwell, who’s a straight up pimp, is the doctor who invented the robots originally, but has been forced out of the company, and was the original murder’s intended target.
From there it’s a decent action film with good special effects throughout. The story reminds me a bit of I, Robot, but tweaked in many places, as well as being more of a social commentary than I, Robot. If you haven’t seen it, but you like sci fi or action movies (or like me both), see it, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
4 out of 5 life like robots you live your life through due to not liking who you are or intense social pressure…
