What can I say about Insidious? Well it isn’t a bad horror movie by any means. It starts out as a typical haunted house movie and then takes some unexpected interesting twists. James Wan (who directed the original Saw) brings something new to the haunting genre, but doesn’t do as much as I thought initially going in.
The movie is about a family moving into (gasp!) a new house. Soon bizarre goings on start (from books moving to house alarm going off). Thing spin out of control from there and eventually becomes about astral projection (out of body experiences) rather than a typical haunted house feature.
!!Spoiler Alert!!
Okay, now that that’s out of the way, I’ll get into the nitty gritty of things. The older son goes into a coma mysteriously. I didn’t want to just blurt that out, because I was sincerely surprised when this coma lasted for 3 MONTHS! Holy crap! I’m not a parent, but that seems terrifying on a real life level.
Apparently the kid (and soon to find out the father) has the ability to walk around without their body when they sleep. The kid ventured too far out into a place called ‘The Further’ (kind of a cool title for this plane of reality) and was captured by a demon (called Lipstick Faced Demon in the credits). The demon and an ass load of other spirits are trying to permanently possess the child’s body. That’s why all of the crazy goings ons are freaking the mother out and keeping the father away.
!!Spoilers End!!
The rest of this may have a few ‘spoilers’, but nothing too drastic. Insidious isn’t gory at all (it’s PG-13), which disappointed me a bit considering it’s the ‘Director of the Original Saw!!!!!!’, but it didn’t take away from the film for the most part. There are a lot of jump scares, but they’re pulled off well enough not to be boring, but they sure as hell are predictable. The cinematography and camera angles in this movie increase the quality of the scares as well.
The coolest part of this movie is the main demon. He is creepy, cool, and reminds me of The Creeper from ‘Jeepers Creepers’ to some extent. More than likely due to his musical tastes and level of power he demonstrates compared to the spirits.
The ending is somewhat predictable, but fulfilling none the less. The pre-ending climax is creepy due to all of the spirits gaining power and materializing. I might be drifting to close to spoilers, so I’ll wrap it up.
Insidious is a solid haunting flick, with some cool twists. I think the theatre adds to the creepiness of the overall experience, so check it out if you’re into those types of ghosty bumpfests.
