Movie Review: Paul

This review is extremely late, but I’m going to go ahead with it anyway, because I want to, damn it!  Okay so, the basic plot is that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are comic, sci-fi, fantasy geeks that pick up a rude space alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) and hilarity ensues.
This movie is for sci fi fans.  It references everything from Star Wars to Predator to E.T.  The jokes are well timed and the content is funny as hell.  This movie reminds me a lot of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz as far as the humor goes, but the editing doesn’t (Edgar Wright who directed the latter two didn’t direct Paul).  This doesn’t take away from the movie, but it’s noticeable for someone who’s seen Shawn of the Dead like 15 times (I don’t know who… yeah it’s me).
One of the funniest moments for me (admittingly not religious) was when Paul owns a hard core creationist.  This also leads to one of my more touching moments when he helps her out later on (she also gains a hard core dirty mouth in the process, which is one of the other high points of the comedy delivery).   Seth Rogen is a good fit for Paul the alien as well, which I didn’t expect.  When I hear Rogen’s voice I don’t think little grey guy with huge eyes.
This is a great movie, and only suffers when you compare it to Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, and only barely.
4.5 out of 5 Space Man Balls
