Sensory Distortion Review
Sensory Distortion is a graphic novel written by Jesse Grillo and published by Bleeding Ink Productions. The project was funded by Kickstarter. The project had trouble with the funding at first, but toward the end, a lot of funding came through.
The novel is about a group college kids who buy a drug called Toloache. The 'Demon Weed' is generally used to bring out the greatest fears in a Native American ritual. In this test of manhood, one must face their worst fear, or have it tear them apart.
The main character, Karen, who also drank the tea made out of Toloache, has a sex offender-violent maniac stepfather that is hot on her trail. This also happens to be her greatest fear, so if he showed up, she wouldn't know if he was real or a hallucination.
The art in the book it pretty well done. It's twisted and demented during the visions, but constant during the real sequences. The style reminds me a little of Hellboy, due to the non photo-realistic quality. The art fits the content perfectly.
The story has a lot of twists, but is more or less a race against time. The drug works fast and many of the victims cannot survive their fears for long. The book is shorter than a lot of main stream graphic novels, but this works in conjunction with the frantic nature of the story.
Sensory Distortion is worth buying. As an independent graphic novel, you may not be sure what to expect. If you enjoy horror comics, then this is right up your alley.
